I had a friend come put some shelves up in my workshop this week and whilst he was working I thought i’d have a go at this project that I’ve been thinking about for a while. Bare with me as I begin to show the process of this design.
When it comes to creating wedding or event flowers for tables, people often say I don’t want anything that obstructs peoples view so you either need to create very tall arrangements or keep everything very compact! However I wondered if there was an in-between space for possibilties….
I started off with the clear glass candle holder and a ball of moss covered in chicken wire, I also had a medium sized pin holder which I wired the ball too. (see below)
The reason for the pin holder is to keep the design weighted and stable on the candleholder. I then started adding in greenery, a very good florist who I used to work with who taught me that its important to green the arrangement up (ie cover with foliage) as much as possible before you put flowers in so that your not filling the gaps afterwards.
I started with mint, jasmine and pittosporum. Always make sure when you’re working with moss that you cut stems on the angle as much as possible to help get the stems into the moss. Also think about stem lengths, I love foliage like jasmine as it drapes and tapers nicely away from the arrangement and doesn’t create a tight feel at all.
The first flowers I added in were white dahlia because of their size. I cut the stems fairly short as I wanted them tighter inot the arrangement otherwise it might look unbalanced. I was also aware I didn’t want the design to look too symmetrical so I tried to think about the angles of the dahlia heads as I placed them in.
As the design progressed I then started to add in snapdragon as an alternative flower shape to the dahlia as they are more pointy.
I finished off the design with some white comos floating over the top and queen annes lace to fill the gaps. Texture is always at the forfront of my mind as I design things like this.
Let me know me know what you think and have a fab weekend in the sunshine.
