Create your own summer door wreath

Diy summer door wreath, wiltshire

As we finally seem to be hitting our stride with summer sun, I needed a new door wreath for our front door so thought this would be a good time to talk through how you can make a simple wreath for your door too. As always I wanted to make a sustainable wreath that didn’t use foam and moss seems the easiest option.

The dahlia as you can see below have finally started flowering, we have had a fairly awful time struggling with snail attacks so it was glorious to see these beauties appear. I wanted to make a vibrant design and dahlia are a perfect summer flower.

Ingredients:

  • Wreath base (i was able to make one and will show you how to)
  • Selection of flowers for your wreath
  • Moss
  • Reel wire or garden twine
  • Ribbon for bow.

As I mentioned above, I have access to a willow thats sprouting so cut myself about 6 lengths of it to make the base. Start with longest one and bend round in a circle, you can twist round so it locks into place.

After that, you can start threading on further willow branches to finish the base off. If you don’t have willow then foliage like clematis vine would work. I made my base about 20cm in width as I didn’t want something too big for the front door. I love the rustic feel of the willow against the boldness of the dahlia.

Once the wreath was made, I laid the moss on the bottom section as you can see. Using the reel wire I tied the moss on tightly, wrapping the wire round a number of times to makes sure it was firmly attached. When its secure give the moss a good soaking with water as that will be the hydration source for your flowers.

Once the moss is attached, its important to take your time on deciding the placement of your flowers and getting them wired in. You want to follow the shape of the circle with your flowers, I used a stem of snapdragon as my starting point as its a good pointy shaped flower. I also used a couple of pieces of lavender statice to fill the space out.

I then began adding in dahlia starting with a smaller head first along with a head of calendula.

With the larger pink dahlia and another couple of stems of pink statice, I’d reached the middle of the wreath base so I looped the reel wire over the moss and flower stems, wound it round the back and posted it back on itself so it locked into place. Chopping the wire off, I was then ready to start the other side.

Starting on the other side, I looped the reel wire on first and copied what I’d done at the beginning with a stem of snap-dragon and a couple of pieces of statice.

Below is the finished design hanging on my front door, the final dahlia I added was the largest and I had to wrap it on securely, going round with the wire a number of times.

For a finishing touch I added a ribbon bow at the top.

Hope you’ve enjoyed seeing this diy project, its a delightful way to embrace the colours of summer I reckon and it adds a personal touch to your front door. 🙂
